Jessore Road to shut for two nights: Major traffic diversions ahead of New Year

Jessore Road in Barasat will be closed for vehicular traffic for two consecutive nights—Saturday and Sunday, from 10 PM to 5 AM. The closure is part of an ongoing project to replace the No. 1 railway track at the Kazipara rail gate and address road surface issues. Jessore Road serves as a crucial route for commuters traveling between Kolkata and Bongaon, and its closure is expected to significantly impact daily traffic, particularly with heavy vehicles involved in both passenger and cargo transport.

To minimize disruption, alternative routes have been established for affected travelers. Vehicles traveling from Kolkata to Bongaon will be rerouted via the Barasat Champadali Junction flyover, continuing to Colony Junction, and then onto National Highway 12 via Santoshpur. Traffic coming from Bongaon will be redirected through Building Junction and Awasiddi Junction, joining NH-12. Vehicles from Taki Road will be diverted via Kachkal Junction toward Rajarhat, while those from Dharmatala Junction will follow similar detours. Police personnel will be stationed at key junctions to manage the diverted traffic flow, while commuters are advised to allow extra time for travel.

The repair work on Jessore Road started on December 20, with the main focus on resurfacing and improving the road surface near the Kazipara rail gate. The ongoing work requires daytime road closures, but the additional night closures over the weekend aim to expedite the repair process. The road will remain closed during these hours to facilitate the track replacement and related construction activities. Local authorities have issued notices and distributed leaflets to inform the public about the changes to traffic movement, ensuring that residents and commuters are well-prepared.

The repair and track replacement work is expected to be completed by January 4. Authorities aim to enhance the road's condition and overall infrastructure to ensure smoother travel for commuters and uninterrupted movement of goods. Given the road’s significance for both local commuters and international trade, the completion of these works is considered a priority to avoid long-term disruptions. The traffic management strategies, including the deployment of additional police officers, are being closely monitored to ensure that the diversions and closures cause minimal inconvenience to travelers.
